| Notes:
QUINCY JONES When I was a teenager, the Count Basie Band came through my town - Seattle. I somehow got Clark to agree to give me several trumpet lessons. In spite of the fact that he was working late at night and I was going to school early in the morning, he managed to find a couple of hours before school for my lessons. He was always loving, inspiring and motivating. While listening to this tape, I discovered that he still takes the time to encourage, inspire and motivate young musicians. The album is great and the talent is fantastic. I'm sure you'll love it. I do. He is a giant, as a musician, and as a human being. Keep on keepin' on, Cee Tee. There will never, ever be another you. With all my love and gratitude and big time props! Quincy Producer's Notes Clark Terry assembled The Young Titans of Jazz to perform in May 2004 at Hans Zurbrugg's International Jazz Festival Bern and it was clear from the beginning there's never been a big band quite like this one. Of course the band plays well, handles the most complicated charts with ease, swings like crazy and is filled with remarkable soloists. What sets this band apart, however, is that everyone in it, from the youngest, teenager Marcus Gilmore, to an old-timer like forty something Conrad Herwig, are students of Clark Terry. Clark has been at the forefront of musical education for half a century, and this band is just the latest example of his mentoring efforts. When Clark asked if CHIAROSCURO would like to release a CD of the best of his performances at the Bern festival, we jumped at the chance, but we wanted to add something we thought would make the release even more special. We felt that in addition to presenting the music, we should also present Clark, sharing his thoughts about music education, all the way from those who gave him his first lessons, through his fifty plus years of training others. This remarkable story, condensed to 50-plus minutes, is presented on the supplemental CD. Nat Hentoff and I asked the questions. Clark's answers have been slightly rearranged because the questions we asked weren't in chronological sequence. The narrative flows much better with a little judicious editing. Many people helped with the production of this CD, beginning with Hans and his team in Switzerland. Jon Bates made the music and spoken tapes CD-ready and Ian Clifford took Rollo Phleck's feeble photographs (taken when the band performed at Birdland in New York City) and turned them into a striking booklet. Quincy Jones sent in his notes ahead of schedule and Pura Fernandez transcribed Clark's comments. We hope you all enjoy the wisdom that can be found in Clark's words and music. Recorded May 2, 2004 at Marihans Jazz Room in Bern, Switzerland during the 28th International Jazz Festival |
