Notes: Ahhhh--the ideal Lindy Hop compilation. My walls are lined with towering shelves of swing music, but I have yet to find a single CD full of my favorite Lindy Hop songs. In my many years of DJing, I pay close attention to what excites dancers. Lindy Hoppers might not know the names on this CD: Jay McShann, Clark Terry, Junior Mance and Al Grey. But, their music always fills the dance floor and my ideal compilation would feature them all. I am thrilled that CHIAROSCURO has taken the initiative to consult dancers, compile the music of amazing artists, and present a collection specifically designed for your dancing pleasure.

For the uninitiated, Lindy Hop is a Harlem-born dance from the big band era. The late 1990s brought about a Swing renaissance, exciting a new generation of dancers. As the resurgence matured, modern dancers discovered the wealth of swinging jazz and blues recorded after the big bands had faded. This evolution of musical taste impacts the way Lindy Hop is danced today. Lindy dancers in the new century go beyond the iconic image of the woman being tossed in the air. Today's dancers utilize expressive melodies, slower tempos and quick breaks. The essence of social dancing is the focus on partner connection, working the floor, and moving as one with the music.

The intricate sounds that inspire contemporary dancers are primarily played at dance events by devoted DJs who spend their time and money unearthing danceable tunes. As big bands of the 1990s went the way of the big bands of the 1930s, these DJs (also accomplished dancers) stepped in to keep the music playing. While DJs continue to dominate the social scene, several groups are dedicated to reuniting live music with Lindy dancers. They include Jelly Roll Productions in New York City and Yehoodi.com, a website instrumental in fostering the Lindy Hop scene worldwide. Jelly Roll, Yehoodi.com and CHIAROSCURO discovered they share a passion for putting together groups of amazing musicians and watching the magic happen. Their common goal drives the assembly of this compilation.

David Jacoby, one of Jelly Roll's founders, had the pleasurable and daunting task of listening to countless hours of music from the CHIAROSCURO catalog, to create a preliminary list of dancer-friendly tracks. Jacoby recruited his favorite swing DJs from across the country to deliberate on the potential of each track. Rayned Wiles, Manu Smith, Greg Avakian, Steve Wexler, and I listened intently for the traits of a danceable tune. A great dance song is first and foremost a great song. Important qualities are a pronounced, solid and laid-back rhythm section, catchy melodies, interesting arrangements, high energy levels, passionate dynamics, tempo, length and fun breaks.

With these elements in mind the selection of songs began to narrow. The music of Junior Mance and Dave Glasser had to be included, as they were both indirectly instrumental in the making of this compilation. (Junior Mance was the first musician who worked with Yehoodi.com and Jelly Roll Productions. CHIAROSCURO owner Andrew Sordoni proposed a dancers' compilation after the excitement of Dave Glasser's CD release party.) The DJ team selected familiar artists and melodies and looked for a variety of tempos, instrumentals and vocals, trios and larger bands. The final thirteen selections were chosen for the enjoyment of modern Lindy Hop dancers. The music on this CD is playful, interesting, laid-back, and swinging. Not surprising, considering the caliber of the musicians included.

Everyone involved is thrilled to put together this quintessential CD of swinging jazz and blues "For Dancers Only", and we hope that the music keeps you dancing, or gets you on the floor for the first time.
