| Notes:
Producer's Notes I first met Don Friedman when he made a series of five wonderful records at Downtown Sound, in 1977 and 1978. He always had terrific rhythm sections, using various combinations of Frank Luther or George Mraz and Ronnie Bedford or Billy Hart. I seem to recall Pepper Adams and. Jimmy Knepper were also on one of the dates. The only problem with the records were they were not for Chiaroscuro, but were produced by Gus Statiras for release on his Progressive label, both in the United States and in Japan. I enjoyed the sessions, enjoyed the records when they were released, and still enjoy those that have been reissued on CD. In those days, Don was one of the busiest guys in town but, I must confess, I never heard him with Clark Terry, someone with whom he'd worked since the 1960s. I heard him with Clark any number of times in the 1980s and 1990s and he was part of Clark's band during various Floating Jazz Festivals. In 1999 we did a live recording with Clark on Queen Elizabeth 2, Don was part of the band, and I listened more carefully. In 2002 1 heard the group at the Village Vanguard, Don sounded terrific and I suggested' a recording project. It was a quarter of a century since I first heard him, but, if anything, he was 25 years better. We're proud to finally have Don on Chiaroscuro and we hope you enjoy it |
